Under the umbrella of Mark Wright KCStG, we were enthralled as we soaked in one of London’s most iconic traditions – the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. This ancient ritual, steeped in over 700 years of history, was truly both an emotional and unforgettable experience.
Following a delicious supper at the Liberty Bounds pub, we took a leisurely stroll to Tower Hill. The atmosphere was electric. The weather was fine. The sun had set, casting a welcoming peace over the medieval fortress despite its dark history. A sea of faces gathered at the gate. The anticipation was palpable. Mark, accompanied by a Yeoman, led us through the Tower. Throughout the evening, the Yeoman Warders offered entertaining and informative tours of the Tower, sharing tales of intrigue, imprisonment, executions, etc. Their humour and insider knowledge was perfect. The ongoing gales of laughter among guests created an atmosphere that was filled with a huge sense of bonhomie. Building new friendships, and realising what an interesting country England is, was one of the evening’s key highlights.
At precisely 9:53, the Chief Warder, resplendent in his Beefeater uniform, led the procession to the gates.
The ceremony itself was a masterclass in pomp and precision. The locking of the gates, the presentation of the keys, and the cry of “Halt! Who goes there?” echoed through the centuries. The precision and pageantry left us all in awe. Needless to say, newcomers as well as those versed with the ceremony were equally thrilled.
As the ceremony drew to a close, we were treated to the haunting sound of the “Last Post”, played by a solitary bugler. It was a poignant reminder of the ceremony’s military origins and the significance of British heritage.
We zig-zagged on the Tower’s cobbled pathways, marvelled at Traitors Gate, sighed at the White Tower, and cringed at the horrors of famous prisoners such as Anne Boleyn and the Kray twins. One thing was certain, the sense of history lingered, blended with the thrill of having experienced something truly special and captivating.
At the end of the ceremony, some returned to relive history at the all exclusive bar which, we were told, was once a stable. Others navigated their way out of the Tower for fear of being beheaded!
